Water Project

We had four successful sessions of the water project at three location, distributing 60 filters systems and buckets. Thirty in in Tegucigalpa, 15 in Escaupa, and 15 in La Carbonera.  I was particularly heartened that all family in La Carbonera now have clean water. La Carbonera is a community just outside on Danlì Honduras that is situated on the city’s dump.  Water projects were started there two years ago and were continued when our translator in 2015, Mario, married a Puerto Rican woman and they have completed additional water projects at La Carbonera. Marleny, the “major” in La Carbonera now plans to extend the distribution of water filters to a neighboring community. NOW THAT IS PROGRESS.

La Carbonera

A little bit about the water project. The project uses the Sawyer PointONE hollow fiber filter which removes 99.997% of viruses, 99.99999% bacteria, and 99.9999% protozoa/cysts. We buy the filters and supplies in the U.S. The filters may be directly purchased from Sawyer but we usually purchase them  from Water with Blessings. This organization located in Kentucky has distributed these filters around the world and has developed educational materials that may be used to instruct recipients on the proper care and use of the filter. Care consists of daily cleaning by back flushing. If properly cared for the filter will last indefinitely.  Families who receive the filters are asked to share their clean water with 3 to 5 additional families. The filters are attached to a five gallon buckets. We purchase the buckets in Honduras. Part of having the recipients take ownership of the filter and bucket is to have them decorate their buckets and to have their pictures taken with their buckets. In Honduras, we ask one member of the group to act as a supervisor bringing the group together monthly to make sure the instructions are being followed and discussing any issues.

Here some pictures of recipients and their water buckets and filters. Much thanks to Sandra who was the interpreter for these sessions and Marleny for keeping it going.
